Big Change in Summer Plans!

Mon Jun 1, 2009, 8:25 AM
I know some of you on dA are my friends in real life, and this is a message for you:

Hey guys--

So some of you know I was planning on staying in Baltimore for the whole summer, living with Janna and Meghan, and that I went back to Colorado to see my mom before her surgery.

Well, when I got back here, my family had intended to hire an aid to take care of my grandma for the time my mom recovers from the surgery. My grandma has M.S. and needs someone to take care of her and stuff. This weekend, that aid decided to back out on the commitment after talking with her family about what it would entail. Due to the short notice and the fact my family can't afford to hire a care agency, I've decided to stick around Colorado for the next six or seven weeks, to take care of my family.

I might come back to Baltimore on select weekends, but...for now, I'm just...in Colorado.

I hope you're all doing well!

Honestly, if you're going to be an aide, you need to be prepared for anything or you aren't going to get far in the business. It's the same with any medical care position. You work in a doctor's office, be prepared to see a guy come in with maggots crawling all over his infected leg or a woman with little worms crawling around under her scalp. You're a vet, you might have a dog that got hit by a car with three inches of bone sticking out the back of it's leg or a horse with a prolapsed uterus covered in polyps (not a pretty picture, trust me). If you work in a nursing home, be ready to change the diapers of a 90 year old perverted man with diarrhea. Hell, if you're a housekeeper in a freaking hotel, don't be surprised if you find a floor littered with bloody condoms the night after two drunk gay guys check out (true story).

Long story short, you should be an aide. You can obviously handle it better than the people that get hired for the job.

I'm sorry I won't be seeing you as much as I'd hoped but I hope everything goes well with your mom and your grandma! Let me know if you come back some time - I'll try to come down and see you ^_-.

...I'm so curious about the bloody condom story, but I'm pretty sure I know how it went down anyway.

You also need to be prepared for anything as a daycare provider it sounds like. My friend Kery has had some pretty freaky stories about little kids with compound, complex arm fractures and amputated 2 year old fingers....

Thanks for your vote of confidence, btw-- I'd like to be an aide if being a teacher doesn't totally wear me out.

I know some people that have worked in daycare that haven't got any creepy stories like that. But I'd assume that kids being kids will get into all the trouble they can.
